    What should you charge?

Start from what you want to earn in a month and work backwards. This is a starting point, not a rule.

    One project₹0$0

Be honest with yourself about rates

    • Indian clients usually pay less than clients abroad for the same work. Both are fine to start with.
    • Start a bit lower to get your first reviews, then raise your price every 3 to 5 projects.
    • Platforms keep a cut of what you earn. Check each one's current fee before you set your price.
    • Not all your hours are paid. Messages, revisions and finding work take time, so the calculator counts 60% of your hours.

    GST, tax and getting paid

    • In India, freelancers generally need GST registration only once their yearly turnover crosses the threshold. Check the current GST threshold on gst.gov.in and talk to a CA before you register.
    • Money from clients abroad usually comes through the platform's own withdrawal, Payoneer, or a direct bank transfer.
    • Freelance income is taxable. Keep every invoice and payment record. A CA can tell you what applies to you. This is not tax advice.

    Spot freelancing scams

    • Never pay to get work. A "registration fee", "joining kit" or "security deposit" to unlock projects is a scam.
    • Fake cheques and overpayment. A client "accidentally" sends too much and asks you to refund the extra. The first payment bounces later.
    • Moving off the platform before paying. If a new client wants to switch to WhatsApp or email before any payment, the platform can't protect you.
    • Work-from-home task scams. "Like videos, rate hotels, earn ₹5,000 a day" offers end with you paying them.
    • Report fraud at 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
